Why were cathy and heathcliff so good together?

i dont get it. the two were so mad on each other, why marry other people? do you reckon they often fantasised about being with each other when they with their new spouses? a lesson not to marry for sake of it i guess! sorry its a bit "out there" , liteary critics any views?
